NATO Newsroom: Syrian No Fly Zone Implemented

NATO has reached a consensus to mobilize the NATO Air Force Armaments Groups (NAFAG) to enforce a No Fly Zone in Syria. This will place a temporary ban on all flights in the country’s airspace. The no fly zone will prevent the regime from attacking civilians or the rebels from using chemical weapons. NATO forces will respond with overwhelming force to any direct attack on the planes.

In that connection, NATO specifies that the flight ban would not apply to flights that are designated to provide humanitarian aid or authorized to evacuate foreign nationals. NATO joint forces will work in collaboration to enforce this ban and prevent the use or mobilization of chemical weapons in any capacity.

Active forces mobilized will include: Aerospace Capability Group 2 (Effective Engagement), Group 3 (Survivability), Group 5 (Global Mobility), and Group 6 (Command & Control). These will report to Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD), which then reports to the North Atlantic Council (NAC). They will be based out of United States' Incirlik Air Base in Turkey.
